Dealing With the Past

Dealing with the past is a process which focuses on memories, both individual and collective. Memories of the past always depend on interpretation, the objective of dealing with the past is to discuss these interpretations and to construct a memory of the past that serves a peaceful future. Some of the ways to do this are fact finding, story telling, memory work, trauma work, and the work with especially affected groups, such as family members of missing persons.

Sometimes the term transitional justice is used for processes that deal with past violence in a country. The concept of transitional justice includes judicial instruments such as criminal justice, truth commissions, reparations and institutional reform. But it also includes non-judicial instruments such as trauma and memory work. Aims of transitional justice are: accountability, deterrence, historical record, reconciliation, redress for victims, removal of perpetrators and capacity-building in the field of rule of law.
